  • Removed concrete garage base

Removed the concrete base of the old garage. Started by using demolition hammer then decided to try using the mini digger.

The mini digger wouldn’t start! The battery had gone flat over winter. Tried to jump start it with some leads we had laying around and had no joy! Went a borrowed some proper sized leads from the Garage round the corner and got it going.. But the alarm went crazy! and would not shut off. Eventually we had to shut down and disconnect the battery. When we restarted normal-lacy was restored.

With the digger we could lift up slabs and break them with a sledge hammer. After removing two of the three sections we had to stop so we could pack for our holiday.

On the Saturday after our holiday I removed the last section by my self.
We have set up a Webcam so we can have time-lapse videos of the work and here is the first recording…

    And the Saturday Recording …

  • Approval on Boundarys and Levels

We received an email from the Planning officer to say that we have approval over the addition info we sent at the end of April. So No further planning issues are outstanding.

  • Sent First Stage submission to Building Control

We have sent in the plans and paid the fee (£541) to the local authority building control department. This is the first of two submissions relating the the build, this one concerns the garage and the ground-works in the vicinity. The second submission will be all the rest…

  • Submitted additional info to the planners

We were reading our planning permission again the other day and realised we had forgotten to send in the information it requested about building levels and boundary treatments. So I have drawn up plans covering these items and sent them to the planing officer.

  • Sent plans to the engineers.

Sent the plans of the garage to the structural engineers today.

  • The first meeting with our Structural Engineer

Paul Burrell of The Burrell Partnership in Norwich visted us today to discuss what we needed from a structural engineer. We had a fruitfull time and aggreed to retain Paul’s firm as our engineers. We agreed a fixed fee of £1000 for the job. We will now send them the plans for the garage so calcs. can be done.

  • Meeting with building control officer

Have had a meeting with our building control officer this morning. A wide ranging discussion took place about our building plans.

It loooks like we are not doing anything stupid !

So we will now contact a structural engineer to have the design for the garage calculated.

  • Groundworks design

3D image of the Groundworks I have been busy for a while sorting out all the below ground design for the house. This is now basically complete and just waiting for the structural engineer and Build control approval.

  • Shingles or Shakes ?

We have been looking at the sample panels for the last few days. There is agrement that the Shakes look just a little too rustic… So it will be shingles on the roof with a mixture of shingles and T&G boards on the walls.

  • Samples of Western Red Cedar for roof and walls.

We can’t decide exactly which style of Cedar to use to clad the walls. So we bought a bundle each of Shingles & Shakes and a few planks of Tounge and Groove boards. These were made up into sample panels about 1m square.
